Communications Director, Protect Our Water Jackson Hole (POWJH)  

About POWJH

Protect Our Water Jackson Hole is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting groundwater, surface water, and public health in Teton County. POWJH advances science-based solutions through advocacy, public education, and community engagement.

Position Summary

The Communications Director leads all external communications for POWJH. This role is responsible for clearly and consistently communicating POWJH’s mission, advocacy priorities, and scientific work to the public, elected and agency officials, donors, and partners.

Reporting to the Executive Director and acting as staff liaison to the Board’s Outreach Committee, the Communications Director develops and executes a marketing and communications strategy that supports advocacy campaigns, strengthens community engagement, and advances fundraising goals. The Communications Director sets strategy and produces content.

The Communications Director serves as one of POWJH’s public-facing representatives, ensuring that critical water-quality issues are understood by the community and that POWJH’s advocacy efforts translate into real-world outcomes.

Key Responsibilities 

Strategy, Messaging & Brand

Develop and implement a clear, disciplined communications strategy aligned with POWJH’s advocacy and organizational priorities.

Define and maintain consistent messaging and narrative across all communications.

Serve as the staff liaison to the Outreach Committee of the Board

Advise the Executive Director and leadership team on messaging, public perception, and communications opportunities related to water-quality issues.

Content Creation & Channel Management

Create and oversee all external communications, including: email newsletters and supporter communications, press releases, op-eds, public statements, social media content, website content, educational materials, and campaign and event materials.

Translate complex scientific, technical, and policy information into clear, accessible language for general audiences.
Track Key Performance Indicators (subscribers, audience, interactions, event attendance) across digital and traditional channels to evaluate effectiveness and optimize impact, engagement and donor support.

Website & Digital Communications

Manage POWJH’s website, including content updates, basic optimization, analytics, and coordination with outside web support as needed.

Lead social media planning and execution, including content creation, posting, engagement, and performance tracking.

Media & Public Engagement

Serve as POWJH’s primary media contact, drafting and distributing press materials, responding to media inquiries, pitching stories and coordinating interviews.

Build and maintain relationships with local, regional and national media.

Represent POWJH at community events, public meetings, workshops, and presentations.

Monitor traditional and digital media for emerging water-quality issues and opportunities, and develop communication responses.

Community Outreach & Education

Plan, promote, and support community outreach efforts, including educational events, workshops, and campaigns.
Coordinate outreach with partner organizations, agencies, and coalitions.

Help ensure POWJH’s communications reach diverse audiences, including homeowners, landowners, businesses, local officials, and visitors.

Fundraising Support

Work closely with development staff to support fundraising campaigns, donor communications, and annual reporting.
Assist with donor-facing messaging to strengthen engagement and stewardship.

Measurement & Coordination

Track and report on key communications metrics (engagement, reach, media coverage, event participation).
Coordinate with staff and Board committees to align communications with priorities.
Manage contractors as needed (designers, videographers, printers, web support).

Experience/Skills

Candidates should have proven experience overseeing integrated communications strategies for mission-driven organizations, aligning storytelling, digital content, media relations, and public outreach with organizational goals.
