Jared Smith

I am the second generation of our family who settled at the end of Fish Creek Road and I spent many summers here enjoying hiking, canoeing the lakes and inner tubing Lake Creek and Fish Creek. I was taught by my aunt to fly fish and as a teenager, I worked each summer as a hay hand on the 3/B Ranch in Wilson which spanned both sides of Fish Creek and used its water for irrigation. In retirement since 2015, my wife, Karen, and I have made Wilson our home.

As a retired civil engineer with over 40 years of experience in transportation and infrastructure projects, I have volunteered on the START Board of Directors for the last six years. I also served on the WYDOT WY 22/390 and Snake River Bridge advisory committee and the current WYDOT WY 22 Corridor Study advisory committee. I joined with other concerned community members in stopping the ill-conceived development at the Watercress Pond on Fish Creek Road and was co-lead for the recently adopted Smith-Collins amendments to Teton County’s LDRs which helped strengthen regulations in the County’s environmentally sensitive areas. I also helped co-found Citizens for Responsible Use of State Lands (CRUSL) and teamed with POWJH in attempting to stop impacts to the wetlands and groundwater on the State-owned 390 parcel.

After being a longtime member of Friends of Fish Creek and POWJH, I joined the Protect our Waters JH board. I believe this organization has been a highly effective voice in working collaboratively with landowners, local and State government to put better regulations in place and to grow awareness of the need to protect our precious waters. I hope to use my working relationships with local government to help put in place programs, regulations and infrastructure that will improve water quality so the next generation and our ecosystem can thrive and enjoy clean and safe water.
